Junk Journal and Yap Goes to Madeira, Portugal
Share
There’s something powerful about creating in a new place.
This May, Junk Journal & Yap is heading to Funchal, Madeira for two special in-person workshops, and this moment feels deeply meaningful to me.
What began as a small journaling gathering has grown into a creative community centered around storytelling, paper, and the simple joy of sitting around a table full of scraps. Now, for the first time, JJY is bringing that experience to the island.
These will be our first creative activations in Madeira, and each one offers a slightly different way to experience junk journaling.Â

Take a creative pause during your time in Madeira.
On Saturday, May 9, 2026, Junk Journal & Yap is hosting a special Travel Journaling Lunch in Funchal, where visitors and locals can slow down, enjoy a relaxed meal, and turn travel memories into a beautiful journal spread.
Instead of a traditional classroom-style workshop, this experience is designed to feel cozy, social, and inspiring.
We’ll gather around the table at Makan Madeira, enjoy lunch together, and spend the afternoon creating layered journal pages inspired by travel, memory, and the textures of the island.
You’ll be guided through simple junk journaling techniques that help capture the little moments of a trip, places you visited, conversations you had, tickets you collected, and the feeling of being somewhere new.
No experience is needed. Beginners are always welcome.
By the end of the session, you’ll leave with completed journal pages and a creative way to remember your time in Madeira.
What’s Included
Each guest receives a travel journaling starter kit, including:
• 60-page A5 starter journal
• Exclusive Junk Journal & Yap sticker pack
• Curated scrap pack with mixed ephemera

• Guided travel journaling prompts and techniques
• Singaporean lunch at Makan Madeira

Why Madeira?
Madeira is very close to my heart. My in-laws are from the island, and we visit often. It’s also one of the ways I’m introducing my son to his Portuguese roots.
Bringing Junk Journal & Yap here feels like a full-circle moment.
What started as a small group of people journaling together has grown into something bigger: a creative community rooted in storytelling, texture, and connection.
Madeira is one of the first stops in our expanding international activations, alongside upcoming gatherings in Canada and the Philippines.
These workshops are part of a bigger vision: building slow, tactile spaces for creativity around the world.
If you’re in Madeira, or know someone who is, this is your invitation. Locals & travelers welcome.
Let’s layer.
Let’s tear.
Let’s tell stories through scraps.
See you at the table.
